Writing & Ideas

Running has always given me plenty to think about.

From the psychology of participation to the boom of the new running culture, I write about the things that can be taken for granted, like why something so simple as going for a run can feel so difficult.

And how often are we quick to assume the problem lies with us? That we're not motivated enough, disciplined enough, confident enough, or simply not “sporty”.

My writing turns these assumptions on their head so instead of asking, what's wrong with me?, I ask, what if the problem wasn’t me at all?

Sometimes my writing looks at what the research tells us, or more importantly, what it doesn't. Sometimes it draws on my experience of running a run club as a business for eleven years. Other times it's a personal observation or something that's made me laugh.

Whatever the subject, I want readers to question the assumptions they've been encouraged to accept and perhaps recognise that the problem was never simply them in the first place.

Writing, speaking & conversations

Alongside my essays, I contribute to conversations about women's participation in sport, running culture, behaviour change and the barriers that shape people's experiences.

My work draws on experience in education, programme design, community sport and advocacy, including public speaking and contributions to discussions about women's safety.

I'm interested in opportunities to write, speak, collaborate and contribute to research and public conversations where that experience can be useful.
