Manchester Marathon is this Sunday, 7th April and RunVerity has 8 members who are running it for the first time. We have 3 members running London 2 weeks later and 1 member running Edinburgh in May. Their training has been long and hard, it isn’t just about the 16 week marathontraining plan, we have been training for this for the last 6 months and now they are more than ready.
Part of the marathon training programme has been about how to prepare not only physically for a marathon but also mentally and this year I introduced a marathon workshop programme that supported runners in their preparation for their event. Some of the things that we discussed were injury prevention, resilience, training programmes, nutrition and fuelling and it was a great to have the support of other member’s experience as they came along and shared their highs and lows of their marathon first hand.
Psychological training is a huge part of my coaching ethos and I am a member of Steve Peters Troop programme which delves deeper into his successful Chimp Managment Programme. Steve is a Sports Psychologist and has applied his “Chimp Model” in his work with some of the country's high performance athletes. I was asked to share how I use the same model to my athletes and here is the result of the video that we put together and shared with other Troop members. Paris Marathon was the first outing for our RunVerity chimps and here you can see how important they were in their support of our athletes.
