We've been talking to some of our RunVerity members to see how they've been getting on.
WHAT MADE YOU JOIN RUNVERITY?
Losing both parents, being overweight and having quite a sedentary job gives you a bit of a kick up the backside. I felt I needed to do something to sort out my fitness and hopefully my weight but it had to be something for me. I have always wanted to run but never joined a group because I couldn’t run, a vicious circle. I was too self conscious about joining in with people who could already run. I had a real fear of not being able to keep up. I tried the couch to 5k but often found myself making up excuses for not venturing out. I took the plunge to join the Run Verity beginners course because a friend was also going so I knew I was going with someone else, who like me, wasn’t a runner.
WHAT DIFFERENCE HAS JOINING RUNVERITY MADE TO YOUR RUNNING?
I can now run. I do now run albeit still not at a fast speed and I rarely make up an excuse not to go out. I have been taught how to run properly, I have learnt that it is more than just picking your feet up and how important my posture and arms are to the success of my run. I have the support I need without the fear of humiliation or failure.
HOW HAS A COACHED GROUP IMPROVED YOUR RUNNING?
I have been coached to accept that it doesn’t matter that I am not fast, accept every small step as an achievement, I am never left behind or made to feel a failure. I have been part of a group that cares about everyone’s achievements. The encouragement I needed as a beginner was immense and I am very grateful to those who took a slow plodder under their wing and turned me into a runner. From not being able to run I have managed several park runs, I am increasing my distance, now up to 5 miles, ever so slowly I am improving my speed and I have signed up to run the Stubbington 10k in January less than a year after joining Run Verity.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO ANYONE WHO WAS THINKING OF JOINING RUNVERITY?
Do it. Be brave and strong. I don’t believe you will regret it. The hardest part was turning up for the first session and worrying that everyone else would be able to keep up and I wouldn’t. I have never been left behind yet. It is the best thing I have done for myself in a long time. I believe I am now well and truly a runner.
